Easter Homework

How far do you agree 'The Patriot' and 'The Pied Piper' are heroes? (21 mark)

The patriot is consider to be a hero (a war time 'hero.') At the start the Patriot is cheered off by people in the street 'roses, roses, all the way' showing how the man was cheered of in a celebration, being a hero having this as he walks down the road. However some may consider him not to be a hero when he returns but he is a villain, this is told in many way throughout this dramatic monologue. The main way Browning suggest that the man (The Patriot) is a villain is that the man is being pushed through the streets with is hands tied behind his back, ' A rope cuts both my wrists behind' adding to the idea that the man is a villain as it suggests that he is very dangerous as he has to be restrained. But he can be considered to be not bad as he works for someone in the army and he was only doing as he was told, and that he is still a hero, as well he will be reward in heaven  'Tis god shall repay,' this shows that he believe he is still a hero.

The Pied Piper is similar as to start he is consider a hero, because he get rid of the rats 'Ringing the bells till they rocked the steeple' this suggest that the Pied Piper is a hero as the saved the towns people, but when they refuse to pay him he does become a villain as he chooses to take the children away from the family. Also he was the one who murdered the rats and left one to live to warn the others, 'wherein all plunged and perished' as he could control them he could have made the rats just go home, he didn't have to murder them, as he did then he must not be a hero.

I agree that The patriot is still a hero as he didn't choose to do what he did however the pied piper choose to do what he did and kill the rats, as well as kidnapping the children.

How do writers use repetition to create meanings in their texts? In your answer, refer to the work of the three writers you have studied. (42 marks)

In the text The Great Gatsby there is the repeated idea of the green light to help create the meaning throughout with the idea of hope, as Gatsby is always looking to it hoping for Daisy, and eventually this light burns  out showing that the dream he looked for has died, and that the American dream isn't as realistic as it may seem. He also uses the repetition of cars to help show the meaning of the consumerism throughout the upper class and how they don't care about the poor, shown in the murder of Myrtle.

The Road uses the repetition of the Road to create the meaning of never endingness, and helps with the journey of the characters as the travel across America. It also has the repetition of the boy being nice to every one they meet sowing the boys kindness and caring, as well as helping to the meaning of never really giving up as the boy is the symbol of a flame, heat in the darkness and the idea of hope in the worst place possible.

The Rime Of The Ancient mariner has the strong repetition of the Albatross, which creates the main meaning of the Ballard that you should love and respect nature as it is god made. It also has the recurring idea of a cross which links to the meaning of Christianity and everything is god made, as well it link to the idea of the sun and the moon being the new and old gods again linking back to the Christian meaning.

Bunker scene

page 88
- shows the motif of the temptation of death
they then go on to meet another boy, this could be foreshadowing the family we meet at the end of the novel, or this could be the family we meet at the end of the novel. However the boy goes close to him due to the act the boy hasn't had any real human friends as he has been born in the pot apocalyptic world.
on page 92 they run out of food they only have water this again shows the idea of death and temptation.
page 94
it is an example of expanding time as a small sequence of events that takes along time to read, its also a horrific imagery of beheading due to possible a battle, maybe a graveyard is there, this could be a warning to everyone who is alive.
'beggars sunlight'  = poor sunlight
'Army in tennis shoes' normal people in trainers.
'4 abreast' suggest that this group is very organised..
bludgeon- heavy weight = old world weapon shows the degeneration of earth.
swaying gait, moving side to side, mechanical movement, non human movement as compared with a wind up toy.
forge= blacksmith, links to the idea of danger as they make weapons.
the pregant women could be either food or to bring new life.

The Road Rat Lesson

Page 61
Dystopia they normally goes to the east to California which is hope and the sun shine state however in this they go to the equator which is south, due to them needing the warmth for winter, which links to the idea of global warming.
- the boy's little truck foreshadows the real truck which comes later in this section of the book.
- the men that appear with the truck are unusual and slightly scary in 'bio-hazard suits' and 'masks' also the fact they have 'clubs' shows the brutality and violence of this world if you have to carry an old weapon.
- they are coughing as well which could suggest they are weak and dying( which might be why the run away later) or/ as well shows the world dying around them.
- as they appearing the punctuation become more frequent causing the tension to be built as well as it mimicking the man's or the boy's heart beats as the people are appearing in the road.
- Macedon = tarmac, which gets described like cracking paint which is caused either by chemicals or very high heat!
- the truck breaking down, makes you remember what the wife says, as well as building an anti climax to the story as you believe they are going to die.
the breathing of the man creates the tension as you don't know what's going to happen next as well ass making a slightly scary atmosphere.
emaciation = thin, malnutrition.
collared= the black rings, horror theme to it as well as making it scary !
'Like an animal inside a skull looking out the eye holes'

the bird tattoo = incorrect, they don't know what it looks like as they worlds eduction is decaying like the world it's self or they have been extinct for a while and they have no clue what it is.
the description of the men leaves the image of rednecks in the readers head.
the man shooting the road rat is a very quick scene showing that he might have had an unusual job, which may have involved killing people.
Free indirect style which mimics the man, as it sounds like the character.
- the brain is describe in high detail, showing the man's medical knowledge before being shot and after shows the horror of it bubbling.
- there is a father son moment as they run away, as the boy is on his shoulders.
'No of course not' another use of free indirect style.
- the eat the road rat, one he is dead, 'waste not want not,' two it show the cannibalism of the society they live in, three it show the reader the danger the boy and the father really are in.
- then one day on the man still hasn't washed the brain's out of the boy's hair, ass he hasn't though it important, that eating and living where. which they are staying clean for them isn't.

how is the story told in Browning's 'the laborotory'

Browning story the Laboratory is about and insane, delusional woman, who goes to an apothecary to buy some poison to kill the man she is in love with, lovers.
The setting in 'Lab' is an apothecary 'faint smokes curling' this is a use of imagery as well as the negative picture of a 'devil's smithy'  as well as her fantasying her killing these women which shows her psychotic nature. this allows the dramatic monologue to give the dark and negative atmosphere and moves it on to a understanding of her mental state.
The voices in 'Lab' are consistent of one person this is the woman that we hear throughout the dramatic monologue 'is this the poison too poison her prithee?' suggesting the need for her to ill someone, which is what we hear as this is the case building which she does through the language of 'he is with her' and the bitterness of her voice that we hear. the case building allow the story to move forward as it make her want to tell us what has happened, and how she hates these women.
The characters in 'Lab' is a woman who is dark and disturbing, her language makes you think she is psychotic, she is very bitter about her lover, 'pure death' showing how she is in love with death and romanises it. which allows the reader to to move though the dramatic monologue  by her fantasying about it whilst she is waiting for him to finish what he is doing, as well at the end her telling him to kiss her '' you may kiss me' this allows us to end the dramatic monologue knowing that she doesn't really are about the man that she supposedly loves. there is also the Browning feature of an implied listener of an apothecary, who is a man, who doesn't like the woman who scares him.
The journey in 'Lab' shows the bitter women who goes in to this apothecary to buy poison for people who have been 'laugh at me,' this helps use to push the dramatic monologue on as it help to build the case study of why she does it. It then goes on to push the story as she wait for the poison and romanticises about how she wants it to turn out, 'Soft phial' which allows to understand her different mind.the journey then shows how she isn't impressed with it 'The colour's so grim.' The journey leaves us with the idea she on her way to kill these women 'next moment I dance at the king's.'

the road rat scene

question answers in one paragraph

  • Mccarthy uses the boy's toy truck to foreshadow the coming of the truck full of the 'bad guy's' , to help us understand the realistic life that the man and the boy now live in. That the description that they use shows a negativity of the world and show the men in 'bio hazard suits' and 'masks' showing some disordered and that the world in dangerous, these men are also consider the 'bad men.' He describe the truck that the men are in as ' lumbering and creaking like a ship' due to it showing the way that the truck is old and worn out, and also refers to Noah's ark and is ironic as they lived when the were on the ark these most likely are going to die. he then goes on to describe the road rat in so much detail as he is trying to slow the time down so that the next bit seems very sudden and sharp, as he goes from this long description to a quicker, snappy bit.we learn a lot about the man as he shows that he has a lot of knowledge as he knows the information about the brain as well as the ability to drop and roll whilst able to shoot the road rat in the head these skill don't just come to people normally these are skills that are taught which implies he had a different job. then the man hears the voice of his wife before she dies. then these men don't chase after them as they don't know how many people are there and the believe they might not be able to fight them or the are weak and hungry to care about fighting them. It takes the man along time to wipe the gore as it isn't that important to them, as living and eating is more important. As the man had been trying to keep them alive by moving around  therefore cleaning, they wouldn't have had the time.
