Quotes that link to the points
Character type:-
Classic comedy character will go first
-        Bragging soldier = Benedick
-        Protective dad= Leonato
-        Fool = Dogberry
-        Innocent girl =Hero
-        “Bawdy” girl= Margaret/ slightly Beatrice at the start of the play but not at the end!
-        Cowardly slave / Baddie =Don John/ Borachio
Comedy of manners:
-        Don John the blocker ‘I heard him swear his affection.’ Page 22 line 153 act 2 scene 1
-        The teacher Friar ‘and wished he had not so accused her’ page 65 line 230 act iv scene 1
-         The buffoon Dogberry ‘talk is most tolerable and not to be endured’ line 36 page 48 act 3 scene 1
Also at the end or a new paragraph say how Dogberry provides comic relief to the audience to keep it a comedy

Plot ideas from comedy of manners
Romance pursued: Hero and Claudio, Beatrice and Benedick
A trick is played: several, both of the Gulling scenes, Don John plan and Borachio, The “second” wedding
A lesson is taught: we don’t actually see this but are left with the idea that Don John learns his lesson with the line ‘I’ll devise thee brave punishments for him’ line 27 page 92 last act last scene
Has sophisticated verbal wit: this is doesn’t really have as Dogberry show though out the play with his use of malapropisms ‘hearken after their offences, my lord ‘ should be affiances.

Shows greed and lust: it does show some ideas of lust as Claudio lusts over Hero and Benedick over Beatrice only slightly

planning for coursework

Walter N.King claims that ‘the proper genre’ of Much Ado About Nothing is ‘a Comedy of manners.’  Does this play fit into this category?

The Point I’m trying to argue is No it does not, that it does contain elements of comedy of manners but it contains other features, such as a romantic comedy
ideas of romantic comedy and comedy of manners:-
·        Contains all the character types of a classic comedy as for comedy of manner it also has the idea of comedy of manner character types the blocker (Don John), the teacher (friar) and the buffoon (Dogberry though the use of malapropisms) ( Thanks for the sheet  )
·        Show romantic comedy thought the use of Hero and Claudio, also Benedick and Beatrice.
·        It also show Shakespeare questioning society and rules  being slightly like comedy of manners more ( I think) thought Beatrice at the start of the play by insulting Benedick ‘a bird of my tongue is better than a beast of yours’
·        The idea of dogberry being comic relief after the important scenes though the use a malapropism ‘hearken after  their offences, my lord ‘
·        Comedy of manners have a plot revolving around Greed and Lust; sophisticated verbal wit and intelligent, unscrupulous characters. (The one I can see are highlighted) showing there isn’t many plot ideas the same as comedy of manners. Also has Romance pursued, a trick is played, a lesson is taught (sort of but we don’t get to see this as it is after the play) and a green world is visited (don’t understand that )

Setting out idea’s
Intro: - my argument that Shakespeare play hasn’t got the proper genre of ‘comedy of manners’ but there are concepts in it.

Paragraph 1:- character types
Paragraph 2:- Dogberry linking to the character type of buffoon
Paragraph 3:- plot ideas from manners
Paragraph 4:- romantic comedy
Paragraph 5:- Shakespeare questioning society

Conclusion: - there are points of comedy of manners in Shakespeare but ultimately comedy of manner wasn’t a concept at the time it was created.

a random questions

How does Don John’s choice of language make the impact of his revelation about Hero all the more devastating to Claudio?
Don John decides to use language that is very clever even though he has said that his language is under what everyone say, he uses his knowledge of language to deceive his brother (Don Pedro) and Claudio ‘the word too good to paint out her wickedness’ this is Don John saying that Hero is evil and having multiple affairs even on her wedding night. The idea of him using reverse psychology on them as he would be thinking that he was lying there for he had to use a lot of intellectual words ‘if you will follow me, I will show you enough, this show him using plain language but he was trying to catch them out as he wanted to prove that he wasn’t lying so he wanted to show them the fake truth that being Margret and Balterzar.

Why does Claudio immediately announce he will shame Hero in the church at the wedding?
Claudio goes on to shame Hero for her affair as in Shakespearean time even though I his time a lot of the men were having affairs but the women being consider quiet and well behaved they were not people consider to have affair well Beatrice might but they feel that the women were weak there for she should be embarrassed for her affair

According to Claudio and Don Pedro how has Benedick changed since we last saw him ? How does Benedick explain the change in behavior?

According to Claudio and Don Pedro how has Benedick changed since we last saw him ? How does Benedick explain the change in behavior?

According to Claudio and Don Pedro, Benedick  has changed his appearance and personality in a few ways, one  that he has shaven his beard and wearing different clothes. The idea of Benedick shaving his beard is link to the idea of Beatrice's ideal man and that this is after the gulling scene therefor Benedick is trying to Beatrice ideal man so they will fall in love and marry as he has started to fall in love with her 'He hath a beard is more than a youth and he that hath no beard is less than a man' this show that he shaved it to be with Beatrice and that maybe he always love Beatrice. It also was suppose to show the ideal man at that time and how he now is suppose to be want women wanted in contrast to what Benedick said that' every woman love me.' Even though his friend decide to mock him by saying ' hath any man seen him at the barbers' this quote is how the men tell us other than seeing him that Benedick has changed his appearance although the men believe this is because of Beatrice, Benedick said 'i have toothache' and that is the reason he shaved his beard to rub' the old ointment' so he changed for his health, not for the love of his life.

I WILL PUT THE OTHER QUESTION UP LATER
