The Woman

The Woman in the road is used to symbolises the idea of life, and the temptation of Death in a post apocalyptic world. Showing her giving up on the trust and belief in human nature showing with her suicide. She is also the reason for most of the behaviour of the character of the man like him showing caring towards the boy 'he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside' to prove his wife wrong as she said something she knew would make him work harder to take care of him suggesting he is not a good father.Which also makes him resent her which could have caused him to keep him and the boy alive, as she was tempted by death he doesn't want that for either him or his son.

The woman is presented is mentioned in the context of two different flashbacks, one start with the woman's suicide, the second is her giving birth to her son. This show a juxtaposition of the temptation of death as well as the hope\ miracle of birth.
The woman is represented as a cold hearted person, with intelligence as she can give an argument, however she doesn't listen to other people, unless it benefits her, as he taught her to kill herself. This also some hints that she doesn't want to die as she doesn't say goodbye to her own son and she didn't really have a relationship to him as he says the next morning he says 'she gone'not my mum has gone, showing that he doesn't have a relationship with her or and attachment to her.
This shows the themes of death as the women dies, and the giving of life.
There are many symbols in the section such as the boy being the symbol of hope for the world, the world dying maybe foreshadowing the man's death. Her final gift symbolising hope for them that maybe everything will be okay.
